LION TALK - FEBRUARY 2015

Thanks to Freeport Lions Duane Smith and Joe Serafini for compiling and producing the print media versions of "Lion Talk" and Meeting Minutes, respectively. This blog is a summary of their efforts.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
JANUARY THANK YOU LETTERS were received from RAMP for our club’s 2014 donation, and from School District 145 for our club’s December donation to the Freeport High School Choir.

Member Communications: - Congratulations to Lion Elizabeth "Liz" Boyer, now known as Liz Moshure, who announced that she was married to Justin Moshure on December 31, 2014. What a nice way to ring in the New Year!

Lion Dave Snyders says turning 60 is the new 40 but he did get new hearing aids shortly after that birthday.

Keep Lion Duane Smith in our thoughts and prayers as he continues to seek medical treatment.  We hope to see him soon at our club events.

Lion Liz (Boyer) Moshure and Lion Roland Caruso both won monthly drawings during 2014 in the District 1D Monthly Calendar Drawing Sweepstakes. The cost for 2015 calendars is $25.00 with chances to win $50.00 multiple times. Three calendar buyer winner names are drawn each evening on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. See Lion Joe Serafini to get your calendars and your chance to win!

Our Tail Twister events and 50/50 drawings at regular meetings continue to funnel small donations from members and guests wallets and purses into the club administrative account. Members and guests have fun while donating to worthy causes.

The Freeport Lions Club has a busy schedule in the coming months. See Calendar of Events further on for complete details.
Lion Terry Anderson reported that in 2014 the Freeport Lions Club purchased 28 pairs of eyeglasses for requests from the needy in our community at a club cost of over $1,200. Our club has purchased/subsidized hundreds of pairs of glasses over the years. He and Lion Dennis Zimmerman are in charge of organizing and collecting our mint candy sales (over $2,500 collected in 2014) to help subsidize the cost of glasses. Candy sales and local businesses patrons who fill the collection trays in sponsoring establishments are an important source of income for Lions Club activities each year. It is an important job deserving a really BIG thank you to both Lion Terry and Lion Dennis for all their efforts. THANKS!

Lion David Snyders has booklets of Lions of Illinois Foundation “Sight and Sound Sweepstakes” tickets for Lions to either buy for themselves or to sell to the general public. Contact Lion Dave unless he contacts you first for a donation. Cost is for a 3-ticket book is $10.00 or $4.00 per ticket. Sales support Camp Lions for Blind and Deaf, Statewide Low-Vision Evaluation Clinics, Social Services for Blind and Deaf, Mobile Hearing Unit, Mobile Diabetic Unit and Used Eyeglasses Collection Program. Lion Dave says: “All tickets and money need to be turned in no later than April 14th”.

The Freeport Lions Club’s 2nd Annual Car Show “Cruisin for a Cause” is scheduled for  May 9th on the Union Dairy property on Douglas Street in Freeport. Chairman Lion Rick Eastman is working to get more sponsors. Lion Rick says we are seeking trophy/award plaque sponsors @ cost of $25.00. More to come as to meetings and getting all Lion's involved in seeking out sponsors. Rick said this year's show will include categories for motorcycles and trucks, so Get your motor runnin', Head out on the highway, Lookin' for adventure, In whatever comes our way!

THINK WARMER THOUGHTS - Again this year, as we have done for many years, the Freeport Lions Club will help sponsor a youth with special needs to attend Camp Lions sometime during June through July 2015. This is a wonderful experience for young people between ages 7 and 17 with special needs to experience outdoor fun with experienced camp supervisors. The Freeport Lions Club prefers to sponsor a youth from our community to go to Camp Lions. If you know of a young candidate in Freeport who has special needs, let us know. For more specific information  see online reference:  http://www.lionsofillinoisfoundation.org/Forms/pdfs/2015CampLions/2015CLAppYouth_Final.pdf

The Freeport Lions Club Scholarship Committee has given $1,000 scholarship application forms to the counselors at Freeport High School, Aquin High School and Highland Community College for our 2015-2016 Scholarship Award for Highland Community College. Applications must be received by the first week of April. Applicants must complete attendance at Highland to receive the award money.
