Lions United For Worldwide Literacy
Our August 13th Featured Speaker was Tiffany
Nieman, Executive Director, United Way of Northwest Illinois. Lion Roland Caruso introduced Tiffany. She has been in her new position since March 2013 and is very excited about it. August 13 was her birthday, and we're glad she joined us, but she admitted it gave her husband a few more hours to get her present! Initially called Freeport Community Chest in 1950, since 1991 it became United Way of Northwest IL. There are 29 member agencies including the American Red Cross, Malcolm Eaton, Amity, The Boys and Girls Club, Voices, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, the Boy Scouts and others in Stephenson and JoDaviess counties that rely on UWNI for funding. Our
club recently donated money for the completion of a United Way project, the “Born
Learning Trail”, that Tiffany said will help educate young children while they learn
basic physical coordination and exercise skills at the new playground. UWNI currently audits agencies to show what they are doing with the funds they receive. Money donated to United Way also can be designated for a specific agency and a specific county. We expect, with Tiffany's leadership, they will reach their goal of $600,000.00. Thanks, Lion Roland, for arranging this great program!

NW IL Medication Disposal - We congratulate Boy Scout Kurt Rodriguez for getting the 1st container now located at the Freeport Police Dept (lobby). If you have some outdated prescriptions, take them downtown for free disposal.

NOTE: Remember, Raffle & Tail-twister funds raised go to our Administrative account to help offset our postage, supplies, added meal costs for attending Zone Meetings, etc - Thanks to all Lions for contributing and helping!
Diabetic Retinopathy Screening - Free Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Degeneration Screening was held on September 17th at the Hawthorn Inn building of Liberty Village from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Lion Troy Pettit organized the screening and coordinated the people who arrived for this free service. Even if only one case of diabetes is detected through this valuable screening, it was worth the effort.
Think Membership – It’s up to us to invite a guest to
visit our club.
And to then ask them to consider becoming a Lion.
