EARTHQUAKE PHOTOS FROM OUR TWIN

WORLD TURNS UPSIDE DOWN - The Freeport IL Lions Club unanimously donated $500 (50,655 Nepalese rupee) to our twin, the Lions Club of Kathmandu Gliese in Nepal; a drop in the bucket when you think about their huge need. Following is a link to pictures of the devastation that their club has assembled and provided to us. Several pictures are graphic, but respectful of the dead.

What would you do if you were there in person or lived there?

DIABETES AWARENESS

by Lions Diabetes Awareness Committee Co-chairpersons, Brian Burke and Terry Anderson

In conjunction with the American Diabetes Alert program, the Freeport Lions Club and Freeport High School Student Council representatives will be distributing sugar-free candy and diabetes awareness literature on Friday April 17th & Saturday April 18th, 2015, at Cub Foods, ShopKo, and Sullivan’s Foods in Freeport IL.
The Lions Club is asking for donations to support programs of the American Diabetes Association. These programs include identification of those who are at high risk for developing diabetes, summer camp for children with diabetes, diabetic retinopathy exams and funding for research.
Over 16 million Americans nationwide suffer from this life threatening disease and 750,000 are newly diagnosed each year.  Diabetes is the leading cause of new blindness for those between the ages of 20-74.  If left untreated, diabetes can also lead to kidney and heart disease, strokes, amputations, and even death.
If you questions about diabetes you may call the American Diabetes Association at 888-342-2383.
The Freeport Lions Club meets monthly on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays. NURSES ATTEND LIONS SEMINAR

The Freeport Lions Club conducted an information seminar for eight school nurses in the Freeport School District 145 on March 17, 2015, to explain the Lions - Shopko eyeglasses voucher program.

In November 2014 the Lions Eye Bank of Wisconsin announced that Shopko Corporation agreed to work with the Lions in their thirteen state sales territory with their Project Eyecare Program. The program provides up to five eye exams and glasses for needy children at each of their store locations. The Shopko doctors donate the eye exam and Shopko optical centers provide the glasses free of charge to the patient. This program has been in operation since 1999 and was previously worked through the Salvation Army.

The following nurses representing their respective schools attended the seminar:  Sunday Bollman, Center Elementary School; Terry Heckman-Hixon, Lincoln-Douglas Elementary; Jill Watson, Blackhawk/Taylor Park Elementary School; Karen Wilhelms, Jones-Farrar Magnet School; Jean Kempel, Empire Elementary School; Melissa Young, Carl Sandburg Middle School; and Bonita Brouhard, Freeport High School. Each nurse was asked to evaluate which students in their school might qualify for the program, and then inform the Lions Club with their recommendations.

Lion Terry Anderson explained this generous program and how the nurses and the Lions can work together to help serve the community in this respect. He has  received five vouchers for eyeglasses from Shopko headquarters for use with the Freeport Shopko store anytime in the 2015 calendar year.

The Freeport Lions are currently waiting for the nurses’ recommendations for students that might qualify, after which the five vouchers will be issued. We hope this will be a multi-year venture if we all do a great job referring folks in need.

OPTIC MAGNIFIER DONATED

On March 26, 2015, the Freeport Lions Club donated an Optelec Clear Vision-Plus Electronic Magnifier to Freeport resident, Judy Mattison. The Center for Sight and Hearing in Rockford IL recommended an optic magnifier for her while on a recent trip to their facility.

Pictured are magnifier recipient, Judy Mattison, and Lion Terry Anderson who helped with the installation and instructions. (Photo submitted)
When Judy’s mother, Sally, visited her daughter from Florida, she contacted Lions Rich Montgomery, Paul Rampenthal and Joe Serafini. Fortunately the Freeport Lions Club had a magnifier recently donated to them, and actually has three such devices currently loaned out in the community. Lion Rebecca Shriver coordinated delivery of the magnifier.

According to Lion Terry Anderson, “It was a nice feeling to see the smiles on Judy's and Sally's faces when the machine was delivered. They were very thankful for all the Lions’ help."

APRIL NEWS UPDATES

Lions Happenings
by Freeport Lions Club Secretary, Joe Serafini

I ran into Taylor Koehn, our 2014-2015 Scholarship recipient, last Saturday night at Fieldstone where she waitresses on the weekends.  Taylor was asked by Lion Dennis Zimmerman to speak at a meeting.  She is excited and agreed to speak at our May 12th meeting.  I will follow-up with her to finalize the arrangements.

District 1D has asked us to provide an item of $25.00 or more value for the District 1D Convention Silent Auction to help offset expenses.  Thanks to Lion Roland Caruso for mentioning getting a golf certificate for Park Hills.  He checked and we sent an email asking for their support, to which they said they would.  This will help promote Freeport Lions, our community and our golf course, and also help District 1D meet their goal of reducing expenses.

Our "Cruzin' for a Cause" Car Show Chairman, Lion Rick Eastman, says all dash plaques have been sold.  However, members should still seek donations "AND" don't forget to sell those 50/50 raffle tickets.

Membership News:  I received an email indicating Lion Mike Schiffman, who currently resides in Ridott, would like to transfer his membership from Dakota to Freeport Lions Club.  I have reached out to him and hope he can join us at our April 14th meeting. Mike is currently the Superintendent of Schools for the Dakota School District, and has been named the new Superintendent of Schools for the  Freeport School District.

Prospective member:  I received an email indicating Joshua Haas (currently a student) has an interest in joining Lions.  I reached out to him and the plan is for him to come to our meeting on the 14th and learn more about what Lions are all about.

The April 14th Meeting Guest Speaker will be Past District Governor, Duane Shaw, who will give us a presentation on Camp Lions.

Wanted to keep everyone in the loop.

See you on the 14th!

Lion Joe
